How Can Chemicals Change How You Look?

When you or a family member suddenly feels unwell from exposure to chemicals or allergenic substances, look for changes in appearance.  Many adults and children suddenly develop:

• Dark blue, black or pink eye circles
• Wrinkles or abnormally puffy bags under the eyes
• A spaced out or demonic look
• Bright red cheeks, nose tips or earlobes
• Wiggly legs
• Nose rubbing
• Throat clearing or coughing
• Lip licking
• A puffy look to face, hands and knuckles
• Adults also sometimes develop a blanched pale ring around the outer edge of their lips and slightly swollen lip edges.

The above changes provide clues to quickly warn family members, friends, teachers or co-workers that a reaction to a chemical or environmental exposure (ie. dust, molds, pollen or foods) has begun.
